Manufacturing SEO is the practice of making a manufacturer, industrial supplier, or distributor discoverable in classic and generative search engines by the engineers and procurement professionals who issue requests for quote. This glossary defines the vocabulary that practice runs on.
Industrial search has its own vocabulary, and most of it is precise. A tolerance, a certification scope, and a request for quote each mean something specific, and the specificity is what makes them searchable.
Terms are defined here as they are used by buyers rather than by marketers. Where a term has a common loose usage and a precise one, the precise one is given and the difference is stated.
- AS9100

- Capability Page
A capability page states one manufacturing process with its materials, tolerances, capacity, and certifications. It is the unit that ranks and gets cited, not the company overview page.
- Contract Manufacturer
A contract manufacturer produces parts or assemblies to another company's design and specification. It competes on capability, certification, capacity, and lead time rather than on a product of its own.
- ISO 13485
ISO 13485 is the quality management standard for medical device manufacturing. It qualifies a supplier for medical device requests for quote, and its scope statement determines which work the certificate actually covers.
- Job Shop
A job shop is a manufacturer producing low to medium volume custom work to customer specification, typically serving a regional radius and specific process specialties.
- RFQ (Request for Quote)
A request for quote is a buyer's formal request for pricing against a specification. In manufacturing it is the primary conversion event, and it carries drawings, tolerances, quantities, and delivery requirements.
