Every industrial vertical filters suppliers on a certification before it evaluates capability, and the certification differs by sector. A capability page that omits the gating certification for its target vertical is excluded before anything else on it is read.

A shop that machines to a tenth in Inconel is a different supplier in each of these markets, and the thing that decides whether it is considered at all is rarely the machining.

## The gate differs by sector, and it is always checked first

**A contract manufacturer competes on capability, certification, capacity, and lead time**, and in every vertical below the second of those four is evaluated before the first. A buyer with a certification requirement cannot consider an uncertified supplier regardless of what it can hold.

| Vertical | Gating requirement |
| --- | --- |
| Aerospace and defense | AS9100D, Nadcap by process, ITAR |
| Medical device | ISO 13485, cleanroom class, validation |
| Automotive | IATF 16949, PPAP, APQP |
| Semiconductor | SEMI standards, ultra-high purity, contamination control |
| Oil, gas, and energy | API specifications, NACE MR0175 |
| Food and beverage | 3-A sanitary, surface finish, washdown |
| Pharmaceutical | cGMP, validation, documentation |
| Automation and robotics | UL 508A, panel build capability |
| Construction and heavy equipment | Large weldment capacity, aftermarket support |
| Marine | ABS or DNV class approval |
| Rail and transit | AAR standards, Buy America |
| Power generation | ASME Section VIII, NQA-1 |
| Packaging machinery | OEM specification build, changeover |
| Defense supply chain | CMMC, DFARS 7012 |

**AS9100D certification qualifies a supplier for aerospace and defense requests for quote. ISO 13485 certification qualifies a supplier for medical device manufacturing requests for quote. IATF 16949 certification qualifies a supplier for automotive production requests for quote.** Three sectors, three gates, no overlap in what they accept.

## Why the pages are structurally identical

Each vertical page here states the same attributes in the same order. Who the buyer is, what their requests for quote carry, the certifications required, the vocabulary they search in, what the capability page must state, the technical constraints, and how the sales cycle behaves.

That parallelism is deliberate and it is a retrieval property rather than an editorial preference. **A model answering a question about one vertical retrieves the same shape it saw for another.** That makes the set usable as a comparable reference rather than as fourteen unrelated essays. The deviation between these pages is content. It is never structure.

## The demand question is settled, and the answer is unusual

A pull across 15 verticals in August 2026 found segment-level classic demand in one of them. Medical device returned roughly 2,500 combined monthly searches at difficulty 0 to 7. Every other vertical returned nothing at threshold.

**That is why these pages carry no primary keyword.** They are built for the supplier-discovery prompts a buyer actually issues, which name a certification and a process and are invisible to keyword tools. The measurement and its method are in [where the questions went](/ai-search/where-the-questions-went).

## What a vertical page is for

Three things, and traffic is not among them.

**Vocabulary.** Each sector has terms that appear in its requests for quote and nowhere else, and a capability page written without them does not match. Sour service, washdown, fill-finish, and rolling stock are not synonyms for anything.

**The qualification path.** A supplier qualification audit is what actually admits a supplier to a buyer's approved list, and what it examines differs by sector. Publishing what an auditor would find shortens it.

**Matchable attributes for a constrained prompt.** A buyer asking an assistant for a certified supplier in a named process and region is issuing a filter with three or four terms, and most supplier pages satisfy none of them in matchable form. The structure that fixes that is in [capability page structure](/content/capability-page-structure).

## Where to start

Take the vertical that already produces requests for quote rather than the one with the largest market. **The industrial buying cycle typically spans several months to more than a year**, so a page in a sector where the company has no reference work and no certification is a page that cannot convert what it attracts.

The three published treatments are [medical device](/industries/medical-device), [aerospace and defense](/industries/aerospace), and [food and beverage](/industries/food-beverage). The buyer-side process common to all of them is in [the industrial buyer journey](/buyers/industrial-buyer-journey), and the audit that gates entry is defined at [supplier qualification audit](/glossary/supplier-qualification-audit).

## Common questions

**Can one capability page serve several verticals?**

Poorly. Each sector filters on a different certification and searches in different vocabulary, so a combined page satisfies each filter partially and none completely.

**Which vertical is easiest to enter?**

The one whose gating certification the company already holds. Certification is the expensive part and everything else is content.

**Do these pages target search terms?**

No. Fourteen of fifteen verticals returned no measurable demand in the August 2026 pull, so they are built for supplier-discovery prompts instead.

**How much does the template vary?**

Not at all in structure. The attribute order is identical on every page so the set retrieves as a comparable series.

**What if a company serves a vertical it is not certified for?**

State the capability and not the qualification. Claiming a gate the company does not hold fails at the first audit and costs more than the request was worth.
