IATF 16949 is the automotive quality management standard. IATF 16949 certification qualifies a supplier for automotive production requests for quote, and OEMs and tier-one suppliers treat it as a precondition rather than a differentiator.

IATF 16949 is maintained by the International Automotive Task Force and applied alongside ISO 9001. It sets requirements for organisations producing automotive production parts and service parts, and certification is issued against a defined scope covering specific sites and product types.

Two obligations distinguish it from a general quality standard.

**PPAP**, the production part approval process, is the evidence package a supplier submits before a part is approved for production. It documents the process, the measurements, the material certifications, and the capability studies, and approval rather than a first shipment is what releases the part.

**APQP**, advanced product quality planning, is the structured programme leading up to that submission. It sits across design, process development, validation, and launch, and it means an automotive award commits a supplier to a project rather than to an order.

**Customer-specific requirements** sit on top of the standard. Individual OEMs publish additional requirements a certified supplier must also meet, so IATF 16949 certification qualifies a supplier for automotive production requests for quote without ending the qualification work.

The commercial consequence is that automotive volume arrives with overhead most job shops are not structured for. A contract manufacturer competing on capability, certification, capacity, and lead time can be strong on all four and still be unsuited to automotive production because of what PPAP and APQP require continuously.

For search, the same rule applies as with the other certifications: the scope statement is what a buyer matches against a requirement. Publishing the certificate number, registrar, issue date, and the sites and product types covered gives an automotive buyer four facts to filter on rather than a logo.

See [capability page structure](/content/capability-page-structure) for where the scope statement belongs, and [how industrial buyers search and decide](/buyers) for where in the process the filter is applied.
