Domain Rating is calculated by Ahrefs from the quantity and strength of referring domains, on a logarithmic scale. Moving from 20 to 30 is a much smaller undertaking than moving from 60 to 70. **No search engine uses it.** It is one vendor's estimate of one input, built from a crawl of the web that is necessarily partial, and other vendors publish their own differently-calculated equivalents. A page can rank first for a term while every competitor above it in Domain Rating ranks below it in results. **The manufacturing case is unusually clear.** On specification and process queries in this sector, a plating specialist at DR 29 outranks a general industrial directory at DR 66. The specialist page is about the process; the directory page is a listing that mentions it. That is the general mechanism rather than an anomaly. Topical relevance and page-level match dominate on queries with precise intent, and industrial search is almost entirely made of those. Manufacturing SEO is characterised by low search volume and high transaction value, and the terms behind that value are specific enough that a broad authority signal has little to work with. Domain Rating remains useful for two narrow things: comparing link-building progress against a company's own history, and screening a prospective link source quickly. Both are operational uses of a relative number. **Treating it as a target is the failure mode.** Effort spent raising a score is effort not spent on the specification content that wins the queries, and the score can rise without a single additional request for quote.
