# AI Overviews on Industrial Queries

<div data-answer>

Manufacturing SEO commercial queries carry AI Overviews in approximately 80 percent of cases, and AI Overview presence reduces click-through rate on informational industrial queries. The pages still worth writing are the ones whose answer creates a reason to arrive rather than a reason to stop.

The saturation figure is the one that changes planning. Not because 80 percent is unusually high across the web, but because it means the surface is the normal case for this sector rather than an emerging one.

## What was measured

Roughly 80 percent AI Overview presence across manufacturing SEO commercial queries, from an Ahrefs Keywords Explorer pull, matching-terms mode, United States, retrieved 2026-08-06.

That is a measurement of **presence**, not of effect. It says an Overview appears. It says nothing about how often it is read, whether the site is cited in it, or what it costs in clicks. Those are separate questions and only the first is well answered.

## The effect direction is clear and the magnitude is not

AI Overview presence reduces click-through rate on informational industrial queries. That direction is well supported and unsurprising: an answer given in the result page removes the reason to visit a page that would have given the same answer.

**The magnitude is not something this page will state.** Published figures vary by more than a factor of three, describe different query mixes, and generally do not isolate industrial queries or distinguish results where the site was cited in the Overview from results where it was not. The reasoning behind refusing figures of this shape is on [manufacturing benchmarks](/benchmarks).

What can be said without a number: informational pages lose more than transactional ones, and pages cited in the Overview lose less than pages merely ranking below it.

## Which pages still earn the visit

The useful split is not informational versus commercial. It is whether the answer completes the task or starts one.

**Answers that complete the task lose the click.** "What does RFQ stand for" is fully answered in the Overview. So is "what is AS9100". A page can be cited, which is worth something for entity association, and it will rarely be visited.

**Answers that start a task keep it.** "AS9100 certified machine shops in Ohio" cannot be completed by an Overview, because the buyer needs to evaluate candidates, check scope, and contact someone. The Overview may summarise the category and the visit still has to happen.

**Specification-level queries keep it almost entirely.** A buyer checking whether a shop holds a tolerance in a specific alloy needs the supplier's own page, and no summary substitutes for it.

That maps onto the conversion event. Manufacturing SEO has the request for quote as its primary conversion event, and a request for quote cannot be issued from a search result page.

## The strategic consequence is not "write less"

The obvious reading is to stop writing definitional content. That is wrong for two reasons.

**Citation has value independent of the click.** Being the source an Overview draws on for "what is AS9100" builds the entity association that decides whether the company is named later, when the question is which supplier to contact. The [glossary](/glossary) exists on this reasoning rather than on traffic.

**The pages that lose clicks are cheap.** A 250-word definition costs little and its return is measured in association rather than sessions. The mistake would be spending capability-page effort on definitional content, not writing it at all.

The correct adjustment is to **write definitional content to be cited and capability content to be visited**, and to stop expecting traffic from the first category.

## Being cited is the achievable target

An Overview draws on sources carrying explicit, extractable, attributed statements, which is the same property that governs assistant citation generally. The structural requirements are covered in [citation-worthy content structure](/ai-search/citation-worthy-content-structure), and the selection mechanics in [how LLMs choose suppliers](/ai-search/how-llms-choose-suppliers).

Nothing about writing for Overview citation differs from writing for assistant citation. It is the same corpus, the same extraction problem, and largely the same engine.

## What to measure instead of clicks

If a page's job is citation, sessions are the wrong metric and will report failure on a page doing exactly what it should.

Track whether the site appears as a cited source on the queries it targets, which is observable by running the query, and which the measurement approach in [AI search visibility](/manufacturing-seo/ai-search-visibility) covers. Track impressions rather than clicks where the search console distinguishes them. And track the downstream measure that actually matters, which is quote requests, since a citation that eventually produces a named recommendation shows up there and nowhere else.

## Common questions

**Should a manufacturer try to block AI Overviews?**

No. The controls that would suppress an Overview also suppress ordinary indexing, and being absent from the answer is worse than being summarised in it.

**Does being cited in an Overview drive traffic?**

Some, and less than ranking first used to. The citation link is present and the click rate on it is low, which is why citation is better treated as an entity signal than as an acquisition channel.

**Do Overviews appear on specification queries?**

Less often, and when they do they tend to summarise the specification rather than name suppliers. Those queries are the ones where the visit survives.

**Is 80 percent going to increase?**

Unknown and not worth planning around either way. The figure is dated 2026-08-06 and should be re-measured rather than extrapolated.

**Does this change the case for long-form content?**

It changes which long-form content pays. A long definitional page is a summary waiting to happen. A long capability page states things a buyer must verify on the page itself.
